UMBRIA PROPERTIES

IL CEDRO
CASTEL GIORGIO, Near ORVIETO

Sleeps 14

The overwhelming feeling of this beautiful house is that of peace and tranquility. The ever changing colors of Il Cedro's spectacular gardens, which surround the property are a constant delight, somehow mirroring the rich and pastel shades of the property's elegant interiors. The cool and comfortable guest annex provides an elegant retreat, with French doors leading onto a wisteria covered sitting area which is truly romantic.

The approach to this beautiful home is divine: with gates opening to a long drive lined by cherry trees, under planted with contrasting pretty blue flowered shrubs. Then on through shaded gardens to a lawn area, with the boughs of the ancient trees providing welcome shade over a delightful sitting area. Originally a farmhouse, the present owners have renovated Il Cedro, making clever use of its three separate areas to provide independent but together living. Beautiful fabrics, antiques and artifacts combine with color washed walls and beamed ceilings. They have used only the finest materials, as well as insuring that the workmanship is of the highest quality - evident from the moment one enters the house. The cool hall is welcoming, with original bricks and a trestle table for dining, and then into a delightful ante-room, with dining table. Steps lead down to a pretty beamed living room with a fireplace, comfy chairs and soft lighting, cozy out of season and cool in the summer months. A charming library / study also has an adjoining section with a single sofa bed in a distinctly "Moroccan" style. Named the "Duchess Room", after someone who came to stay, and with its small bathroom, it could serve as a single person "suite". A large, well equipped kitchen with a working fireplace and breakfast table must have been the center of many family gatherings in the past. From here, a door separates the larger guest wing, which could bed ideal for a visiting family. Two bedrooms on the ground floor, and upstairs, the large double bedroom with high ceiling and a state of the art bathroom, designed by the owner's architect son is truly spoiling. Back in the main house, the master bedroom deserves mention with its beamed ceiling and wonderful old Neapolitan bed that the owners had to cut down to size. From the kitchen is a lovely and elegant wisteria covered loggia, surrounded by lawns, and a table for 18. A wood burning pizza oven ensures the most Italian meal of all is savored as "the real thing". The wisteria covered loggia leads to separate guest annex, a beautiful sitting area with two huge, comfortable sofa beds, a tiny kitchenette and bath with shower, ensuring an element of independence. From here, steps lead down to a further simple bedroom with bath, ideal for older children or a nanny. The elegant pool area, set away from the house, is a peaceful place to retreat. In the spring and early summer the gardens are a profusion of rhododendrons, hortensia, scented roses and other rare shrubs. We highly recommend this charming property, run with a quiet efficiency behind the scenes, thus ensuring guests are unobtrusively looked after, while enjoying total relaxation.
