Montauto lies on its own in the midst
of olive trees and Mediterranean
macchia and offers a spectacular view
of the Tuscan countryside. A jewel of
local Tuscan architecture, it is built in
the traditional local stone around an
enclosed courtyard. The natural sense
of proportion and space which was
developed by the rural builders over the
centuries comes inti its own at Montauto.
A judicious restoration turned the
ground floor - originally used as stables
and storage rooms - into a spacious
kitchen and several bedrooms, which
open up onto a pretty courtyard with
rambling roses, lavender and rosemary
bushes.
This is an ideal spot for al fresco dining
during the summer months. The house
used to be lived in by the owners
themselves, and therefore, lives up to the
standard of an elegant mansion with all
of the modern amenities that we are
accustomed to. Precious antiques, books,
local pottery, terra cotta flooring, and
exposed beams create a welcoming
atmosphere.
The garden was designed to offer many
different spaces for different moments
of the day. You will find two outside
dining areas, a pergola covered in
wisteria and a terrace with comfortable
chairs, ideals for cocktails at sunset. A
three to five minute walk down a shady
path lies the pool, surrounded by a
Mediterranean garden.
The open plan kitchen is the main room
on the ground floor. During the summer
months, meals are served outside, either
in the courtyard or under the shady
pergola. All of the rooms on the ground
floor have French doors leading to the
garden, giving Montauto the easy
Mediterranean way of life where indoors
and outdoors meld into one another. On
the first floor, the living room opens
onto a small loggia with steps leading
down to the garden. The surroundings of
Montauto are untouched by modern
civilization, being mainly woods and farm
land. In spring and autumn, one can go for
long walks, and light a blazing fire in the
kitchen and living room upon ones return.
