IL CASATO
MONTICCHIELLO
|
Sleeps 12
The farmhouse known as Il Casato
lies in the peaceful hills of Tuscany
near Monticchiello, Montepulciano
and Pienza, in the heart of the Val
d'Orcia. It was entirely built of
stone in the 18th century, and was
once the dwelling for the families
of peasants who were working on
the estate. Il Casato has been
restored and refurbished, but the
original architecture has been fully
respected, and most of the building
materials have been recovered from
the earlier demolished farmhouse.
The result is simply spectacular. The
former barns have been turned into a
large hall full of light, the old sheep
pen is now the outside covered dining
area, and the hayloft has been made
into a large bedroom.
Driving across a beautiful country
landscape with centuries old trees,
farm land and olive trees, you finally
get to Il Casato. Entering on a lavender
lined driveway, you are immediately
struck by the manicured lawns outside
of the house. Growing next to the
house large plantings of rosemary,
roses of many shades and the beautiful
yellow ginestra. Entering the courtyard,
on the right is a covered dining area
with a wood burning oven and barbeque.
Inside the house are the original cotto
floors and oak beamed ceilings. The
house is full of arches, which create an
open and dynamic space and make the
house look larger and brighter. In the
living room there is a large stone
fireplace spreading a warm and cozy
atmosphere all around. Upstairs, there
is a hall furnished with sofas whose
old-rose hues brighten up the whole
room. The bedrooms are in perfect
harmony with the general atmosphere
of the house, as they also have beamed
ceilings and cotto floors. The windows
frame breathtaking views of the Tuscan
countryside, and the light coming from
the outside is magically reflected all over
the rooms, enhanced as it is by the
white walls.
The garden surrounding Il Casato
confirms the farm's unique atmosphere.
There is a vegetable garden with herbs,
artichokes, asparagus, tomatoes and salad
greens, which the guests are welcomed to
pick. The owners of Il Casato have been
living in the area for the last 50 years. The
founder of the Gonzi family simply adored
the countryside and decided to devote his
life to farming and to the improvement of
this area. Thus, the moonlike landscape of
the "crete" clay hills, was gradually
transformed into farmland. Today, the
Gonzi family holdings include five farms
growing mostly wheat and olives.
