PANTELLERIA
Forty kms. closer to Tunisia than to Sicily, stronghold of the Moors for four hundred years and swept by the Scirocco, Mistral, Tramontana and Libeccio winds, Pantelleria is unique and captivating. Derived from the Arabic "bent el-Rhia" meaning daughter of the winds, Pantelleria is a black, volcanic island lapped by exceptionally clear blue waters and inhabited by unspoiled and laid back islanders. - this is a haven of safety and calm.
Pantelleria's Moorish past is evident by the abundance of dammusi - houses of black volcanic stone and whitewashed, domed roofs with thick walls designed to be naturally cool in a hot climate. Due to its strategically important position, it became a stronghold of the Fascists during WW II and was badly bombed by the Allies with the effect that the main town of Pantelleria lost much of its ancient past. However, it is not without its charm and in the evening it takes on another appearance and there are plenty of harbor side bars where one can enjoy watching the fishing boats returning, as well as some excellent, well prices restaurants, a fish market and plenty of shops. There are no beaches of any kind on Pantelleria but there is some fantastic swimming off the rocks in some beautifully scenic spots.
Many Italians stop for a picnic on the flat black rocks and pour olive oil into the tiny bowl shaped holes lined with dried sea salt and then dip in their fresh bread. Hot springs, natural saunas, steaming geysers and rock pools all around the island makes this an ideal destination for those looking for good swimming, a relaxed ambiance and outside living. Many will love the opportunity to take a boat around the island and explore the remote and marvelous rock formations. When you have had enough of the water, head up to the mountains in the middle of the island and enjoy some great walking and even trek up to Pantelleria's main volcano, the Montagna Grande, followed by a foray into the Sauna Naturale. Pantelleria is vary casual, its way of life simple, and it has an appeal that is indefinable - a quality that will appeal to some but not all.
It is not an island for those wanting constant contact with the outside world….and beware of the winds which mean that the planes cannot always arrive! Adventurers and escapists alike will love the friendly relaxed place - no hassles, no traffic, and very few English.

MONASTERO
It is rare that one comes across anywhere
as unique and unusual as Monastero on
the island of Pantelleria. An inspirational
setting which has been preserved by the
famous Italian photographer Fabrizio
Ferri, to create a stunningly attractive,
simple yet stylish oasis in which to relax
and enjoy the magic of Pantelleria. Ferri
has sympathetically renovated this
"hidden village" of dammusi in the valley
of Monastero, taking care to maintain
traditional and authentic styles and
patterns while simultaneously providing
modern baths and luxuries such as the
swimming pool modeled after Lago di
Venere.
Stylishly designed in the Islamic
tradition, Monastero has been furnished
with a variety of Moroccan, Spanish,
Indian, Thai, Brazilian and Italian pieces,
all of which add to the overall feel of
relaxation, meditation, and sleep.
Bathrooms are spacious, all in white with
scented candles and large white robes,
while the bedrooms are ethnically
furnished with glass doors beyond the
traditional wooden ones - from these one
can watch the bending palm trees across
the sky as one of the warm African winds
blow up. Outside, Moroccan cushions and
Indian rugs provide an ideal setting for an
exceptional dinner by candlelight.
Monastero is renowned for its superb
cuisine with meals prepared by Gigi,
Monastero's Neapolitan cook.
Sitting
beneath the palm trees, guests can enjoy freshly caught fish, couscous, local soft tumma cheese, Monastero olive oil and passito wine and delicious vegetables from Monastero's own garden. Ferri has though of everything - a masseuse, personal trainer, boat trips with a picnic, diving and hiking - anything can be arranged. Service is of an exceptionally high standard with the total peace and quiet, the fabulous climate and the simple yet sophisticated atmosphere of Monastero makes this a very special place to "get away from it all". Anonymity, privacy, and solitude can be found here and as one relaxes on the cushion strewn patio, sipping a chilled glass of wine and watching the sunset over the timeless unchanging landscape, all one can hear is "the rustling of the palm trees in the wind".
