IL CASTELLO
MARSILIANA
|
Sleeps 13
From the distance, Marsiliana might look
like a castle, but as you reach the top of
the hill and drive through the gate, the
feeling is more than that of an informal
hamlet. To the left is the honey colored
main house, with a bubbling fountain in
the front courtyard.
The buildings to the right - a simpler
architecture decorated with a great number
of geraniums in terra cotta pots of different
sizes and shapes - house two families
working on the estate as well as the stables,
granary the watchtower and the Casa di
Massimo, an apartment for rent.
Originally a hunting lodge, Marsiliana is now
used year round. The nearby seaside (14 kms.)
has made it attractive during the summer
months from May to October. In late autumn
and winter, Marsiliana becomes a wonderful
place for combining cultural experiences with
Tuscan country life. The closeness of the
ocean softens the climate. Your first glimpse
of Pitigliano will possible stay with you for
the rest of your life, and the next day, you
might be taking a walk on the beach, shopping
at the local market, looking for mushrooms, or
collecting chestnuts in the local woods. Later
on, you can be cooking a wonderful meal to go
with the local red wine, the Morellino di Scansano
The main building, known as the Castello, was
readapted for residential use during the 18th
century. It was designed to be perfectly divided
into two parts, the winter half and the summer
half. On the ground floor there are two living
rooms, a large dining room, a fully equipped
farmhouse kitchen, two bedrooms and two baths.
A door opens onto a staircase, decorated in trompe-
l'oeil, at the top of which is a landing, which leads
to four bedrooms and one single bedroom with two
baths. Most of the rooms on the ground floor have
large fireplaces, as does the kitchen. The patio at
the front of the house, with its wisteria covered
pergola, is a wonderful place top escape the heat of
the summer. On the opposite side of the house is a
three tiered garden with a profusion of citrus trees
and palms. A pathway through the garden leads to
the swimming pool. The view from the garden and
the house looks over silvery olive groves, the plain
below and across to the sea.
