Nothing can prepare one for the
spectacular arrival in the turquoise
harbor, and the sight of the beautiful
villa perched high on golden brown
volcanic rocks above this enchanting
town. This is Ponza, an oasis in the
Tyrrenian Sea. - a bolt hole for smart
Romans who adore this idyllic and
unpretentious island - and Casa
Fontana, an understated , yet utterly
gorgeous property.
Ponza is famous for its spectacular
scenic beauty, lush vegetation, and tiny
rock beaches dotted with Roman
remains. Steeped in history, and located
midway between Rome and Naples, it is
a short ferry ride from the mainland
beaches of Anzio. Life in Ponza moves
at its own pace, only waking up in
August for a few frenetic weeks, while
life at Casa Fontana is simply an ongoing
experience. There is a touch of Greece,
but it is essentially Italian. White with
blue shutters, cool floors with tiles from
Vietri, compliment an eclectic mixture of
antiques and "shabby chic" furniture. The
color is overwhelmingly white - sofas,
chairs, curtains, fluffy white bath towels -
simple yet elegant, with huge windows
framing a backdrop of azure sea. The
owner has thought of everything for her
guests comfort: lots of books, ice maker,
stereo, VCR and even a fax machine. A
terrace with a marble table for 12
combines as a fantastic spot for sitting out
and watching life go by in this enchanting
small port. This is the ultimate romantic
spot for dinner under the stars. From here
there is a scented garden with climbing
roses, lavender, bougainvillea, and palm
trees lead the way down to the mosaic tiled
plunge pool area - and a separate Turkish
steam room - a fantastic spot to sun bathe
or sit in the shade. Life here is a dream; a
meal cooked by the unobtrusive resident
housekeeper, or by a leisurely walk to a
trattoria? Hire a boat and swim in the
deserted coves along the dramatic coastline
of towering cliffs. Scuba dive in the crystal
clear waters with the Ponza Diving Center.
Fontana is a place for honeymooners,
hedonists, or just escapees from a stressful
lifestyle.

Facilities: washing machine, dishwasher, telephone, SAT TV, 11 x 11 ft pool. Maid service: 4 hours per day, 6 days per week. Prepares breakfast daily. Linen change twice per week. Cook: Services of resident housekeeper / cook who will shop and cook at extra charge.
